How it works

  1. 1Choose a picture. Logos, icons, drawings, signatures and scans with clear shapes work best.
  2. 2Pick Colour or Black and white, then set the number of colours, the detail and the smoothing. The preview updates as you change them.
  3. 3Tick Remove background if the picture sits on a plain background you do not want in the vector.
  4. 4Select Convert to SVG, check the before and after with the file sizes, and download the SVG.

What the options do

Colour or black and white
Colour keeps the main colours of the picture. Black and white makes a single-colour shape, which suits signatures, line art and scanned drawings and gives the smallest file.
Colours
How many colours the vector may use. Few colours give flat, simple shapes and a small file. More colours follow the picture more closely but make the file larger.
Threshold
For black and white. Pixels darker than this become black, lighter ones become paper. Raise it to keep faint lines, lower it to drop a grey background.
Detail
High detail follows small corners and thin parts closely but adds many points. Low detail gives fewer, rounder curves.
Smoothing
Blurs the picture a little before tracing and drops tiny specks, so edges come out smoother and the file gets smaller.
Remove background
Leaves out a solid background shape that covers the whole picture, so the SVG is see-through around the subject.

Questions people ask

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser, so your picture never leaves your device.

Which pictures work well?

Flat artwork: logos, icons, clip art, signatures, line drawings and scanned sketches. Photos can be traced too, but they turn into many shapes and a large file, and they look like a poster, not a photograph. For photos, use fewer colours or keep the original format.

Can I get an SVG with a transparent background?

Yes. Tick Remove background for a picture on a solid colour, or start with a PNG that is already transparent. If the background is a photo, remove it first with Background remover.

How do I make the SVG smaller?

Use fewer colours, lower the detail and raise the smoothing. Black and white mode gives the smallest files. The preview shows the size as you change the settings.

Why does my result look rough or blobby?

The picture may be small or blurry, or have too few colours. Try a larger source image, raise the detail, or add colours. A clean, high-resolution picture traces best.

Is the SVG free to use?

The tool is free. What you may do with the SVG depends on who owns the original picture, so check that you have the right to use and change it.
