Base64 encoder and decoder

Encode text to Base64 or decode it back, with full Unicode and URL-safe support.

Your files stay on your device

How it works

  1. 1Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. 2Paste your text or Base64 string.
  3. 3Turn on URL-safe if the result goes into a URL, token or file name.
  4. 4Copy the result or download it.

What the options do

URL-safe alphabet
Uses - and _ instead of + and /, as in JWTs and many web APIs.
Keep = padding
Base64 normally ends with one or two = signs so the length is a multiple of four. Switch off to drop them.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. What you paste is never sent to a server. Tokens, keys and credentials you paste here stay on your device.

Questions people ask

Is Base64 encryption?

No. It is only a way to write bytes as plain text, and anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide a password.

Does it work with Bangla, emoji and other languages?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, and decoded back as UTF-8, so every script round-trips correctly. The plain btoa function in a browser fails on these characters.

Why do I get "not UTF-8 text" when decoding?

The Base64 is valid but the bytes are not text, for example an image or a zip file. This tool decodes to text only.

Can I paste a data URL?

Yes. A prefix such as data:text/plain;base64, is removed before decoding. For images use the Image to Base64 tool.

Why is the output about a third longer?

Every three bytes become four characters, so encoded data is roughly 33 percent larger.
