How it works

What the options do
- Find and Replace with
- The text to look for and the text to put in its place. Leave Replace empty to delete every match.
- Regular expression
- Treats Find as a pattern. In Replace, use $1, $2 for captured groups and $& for the whole match.
- Match case
- When off, Order and order are the same.
- Whole words only
- Stops "cat" from matching inside "catalog".

Questions people ask
How do I swap two words with a pattern?
Turn on Regular expression. Find (\w+) and (\w+) and replace with $2 and $1.
Why do I see an error?
The pattern is not a valid regular expression, for example an unclosed bracket. The message says what is wrong.
Does a plain search treat dots and brackets literally?
Yes. Special characters only have meaning when Regular expression is on.
Can I use new lines in the pattern?
With Regular expression on, write \n for a line break in Find. In Replace, a real line break needs a different approach, so paste the break itself into the Replace box.
Can I undo a replacement?
Your original stays in the left box. Edit Find and Replace and the result updates, so nothing is lost.
