How it works

  1. 1Choose a video, or drag it onto the page. Files up to 300 MB are accepted.
  2. 2Set where the clip starts and how long it runs, up to 30 seconds.
  3. 3Pick the frame rate and width. Smaller values give a smaller GIF.
  4. 4Select Make GIF and download it.

What the options do

Start and length
The part of the video to use, in seconds. Short clips of 3 to 6 seconds work best.
Frames per second
8 to 12 looks fine for most clips and keeps the file small. 20 is smoother but much larger.
Width
The height follows the shape of the video. 480 pixels suits chats and web pages; 240 pixels makes a small file.

Privacy

The video is processed by a converter running inside your browser. It is never uploaded to a server.

Questions people ask

Is my video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made in your browser with a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Your video stays on your device.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF is an old format that stores each frame almost as a picture. Lower the width, the frame rate or the length to shrink it.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format cannot carry sound.

Why does it take a moment to start?

The converter is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you use an audio or video tool. After that your browser keeps it.

How good are the colours?

The tool builds a colour palette from your clip, so the 256 colours of a GIF are used where your clip needs them most.
