How it works

  1. 1Choose your colour PDF.
  2. 2Pick a resolution and an image quality.
  3. 3Select Convert to grayscale.
  4. 4Download the gray PDF and compare the size.

What the options do

Resolution
150 dpi reads well on screen and in print. 300 dpi keeps small text sharper but makes the file larger. 100 dpi gives the smallest file.
Image quality
Higher quality keeps more detail and uses more space. 80 is a good balance for documents.

Questions people ask

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. Pages are drawn and converted in your browser. Your file stays on your device.

What happens to the text?

Each page is saved as a gray picture, so text can no longer be selected, searched or copied, and links stop working. Keep your original if you need those.

Will the file get smaller?

Often, for colour scans and photo-heavy files, but not always. A text-only PDF can grow because text becomes an image. The result shows the sizes so you can choose.

Which resolution is best for printing?

300 dpi for sharp print, 150 dpi for everyday documents.

Does it work on large documents?

Yes, page by page. Very long documents at high resolution need a lot of memory, so use a lower resolution if your browser slows down.
