Questions people ask

Do emoji count as one character?

Here, yes: an emoji, even a family emoji built from several parts, counts as one visible character. Some platforms count differently, for example X counts most emoji as two.

Are these limits official?

They are the commonly published limits: 280 for an X post, 150 for an Instagram bio, 2,200 for an Instagram caption and 5,000 for a YouTube description. Platforms change them, so check the current rule. Page titles and meta descriptions are guides, because search engines cut by width.

Why does my SMS count differ?

SMS allows 160 characters in the basic GSM alphabet but only 70 if the message has any other character, such as Bangla or most emoji. Longer messages are split into parts.

What is the difference between letters and characters?

Characters include letters, digits, spaces and punctuation. Letters are only the alphabet characters.

Is a new line counted?

Yes, as one character in the total. It is not counted in the "without spaces" figure.
