Appear at the top right when someone hovers over the thumbnail.
Progress bar
The red line along the bottom edge for videos someone has partly watched.
Safe area
A margin of about 5% in which text and faces stay clear of edge cropping.

The same image as it appears on a phone feed, in search and in the suggested list.

Questions people ask

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

1280 by 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF format. Other ratios are cropped.

Why check the small sizes?

Most views start from a small thumbnail on a phone. Text that is readable full size can become a blur at 140 pixels wide.

Are the overlay positions exact?

They are close guides. YouTube changes its layout and each device differs slightly, so leave extra space.

Can I use a video file?

Yes. Choose a video and move the slider to the frame you want to test. The video stays on your device.

How much text should a thumbnail have?

Few words, large and high contrast. Three to five words are common. The title carries the rest.
