Background remover

Cut the background out of a photo and save a transparent PNG, or put the subject on a colour or another picture. It runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. 1Choose a photo of a person, product, pet or object. You can add up to 20 at a time.
  2. 2Pick what goes behind the subject: transparent, a colour or your own picture. Open the edge options if the cut-out needs a touch more.
  3. 3Select Remove background. The first time, the AI model downloads once (about 115 to 225 MB) and your browser keeps it for next time.
  4. 4Check the before and after, then download the PNG. With several photos you get one ZIP.

What the options do

Background
Transparent keeps the cut-out on a see-through layer (PNG or WebP). Colour fills the space behind it with a solid colour. Picture places your own image behind it, scaled to cover the frame.
Snap edges to the photo
Sharpens the outline of the AI cut-out using the real edges in your photo, which brings back fine hair and fur, and it removes colour from the old background along the edge. Leave it on unless the result looks too hard.
Trim edge
Shrinks the cut-out by a few pixels to remove a thin light or dark line left around the subject.
Soften edge
Blurs the outline slightly. Useful when the subject will sit on a very different background.
Format
PNG keeps full quality and transparency. WebP is smaller and also supports transparency. JPG is smallest but cannot be transparent, so a transparent result is placed on white.

Questions people ask

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model runs inside your browser, on your graphics card when your browser supports WebGPU and on your processor otherwise. Your photo never leaves your device. Only the model file, which holds no personal information, is downloaded once from Hugging Face and kept by your browser.

Is it really free? Any watermark or limit?

It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The result has the same size as your photo, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side. Larger photos are scaled down to that size.

Which AI model is used, and can I use the results commercially?

It uses BiRefNet lite, an open model released under the MIT licence, which allows commercial use. We checked other well-known models and chose this one because the others either have a non-commercial licence or left marks or holes on our product and animal test photos.

How good is it on hair, fur and glass?

Very good on people, pets and most products, including loose hair and fur against a plain or moderately busy background. It struggles with very thin see-through parts, such as a wine glass with something behind it, and with a subject that looks almost the same as its background. The edge options help with small flaws.

Why is the first run slow?

The model is a large file that downloads once, then your browser keeps it. After that it starts quickly. Processing one photo takes a few seconds with WebGPU. On a computer without it, a photo can take half a minute or more.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on recent phones with enough memory. The download is large, so use Wi-Fi. If your browser runs out of memory, try a smaller photo.
