What the options do

Low
Large photos are shrunk a little and saved at high JPEG quality. Best when the file must still print well.
Recommended
Photos are scaled to about screen size and saved at medium quality. Good for email and uploads.
Strong
Photos are scaled down more and saved at lower quality. The file is smallest, but fine detail in pictures can look soft.
Remove document properties
Deletes the title, author and other hidden information stored in the file. It saves a little space and some privacy.

Questions people ask

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file is opened and rewritten inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears it.

Why did my file barely change, or stay the same?

Most of the weight in a PDF is usually photos. A PDF made from plain text, or with images that are already small, has little to remove. When the result would not be smaller, you get your original file back with a note saying so.

Will the text still be selectable and searchable?

Yes. Only pictures inside the PDF are changed. Text, links, bookmarks and form fields stay as they were.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan is one big picture per page, so it can shrink a lot. If the scan is saved in a special black-and-white format, this tool leaves it as it is, because changing it would not make it smaller.

Does it lower the quality of my images?

Yes, that is how the file gets smaller. Photos are saved again as JPEG, so a little detail is lost at every level. Use Low if you plan to print. Keep your original file as a backup.

Can it open a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password first, then compress the file.
