Auto face blur

Find every face in a photo and blur, pixelate or cover it in one click. Untick the faces you want to keep, or draw a box over anything the finder missed. It runs on your device, so your photo is never uploaded.

How it works

  1. 1Choose a photo. The tool finds the faces and numbers them. The first time, a small face-finder model (under 1 MB) downloads once.
  2. 2Click a face, or its name under the photo, to untick it and keep it clear. Drag on the photo to add a box for a face or a car plate that was missed.
  3. 3Choose Pixelate, Blur or Solid box, then set how strong it is, the shape and how much of the head to cover.
  4. 4Select Hide faces and download the new photo. The original file is not changed.

What the options do

Effect
Pixelate turns the face into large squares. Blur smooths it. Solid box covers it with a flat colour. A solid box is the surest way to hide who someone is.
Strength
Higher hides more detail. It scales with the size of each face, so small and large faces are hidden to the same degree.
Shape
Oval follows the shape of a head and looks more natural. Rectangle covers the full box.
Cover area
Tight covers just the face. Normal also covers the hair line and chin. Wide covers more of the head, ears and neck.
Find more faces
Normal gives few false alarms. Find more lowers the bar so smaller, turned or partly hidden faces are caught, with a chance of an extra box you can untick.

Questions people ask

Is my photo uploaded?

No. A small open model (YuNet) runs in your browser to find the faces, and the effect is applied on your device. The photo never leaves it. Only the model file, which holds no personal data, is downloaded once.

Will it find every face?

Not always. It handles faces from about 15 pixels wide and most turned heads, but it can miss faces that are very small, side-on, covered by a mask or sunglasses, or blurred. Always check the preview, then draw a box over anything missing before you share the photo.

Is blur safe enough to hide someone?

A strong blur or a large pixelation hides a face well in normal viewing, but a light blur can sometimes be partly recovered by software. For anything sensitive use a solid box, which removes the picture underneath completely.

Can I hide something that is not a face?

Yes. Drag on the photo to add your own box, for example for a car number plate, a name tag or a screen. It is treated like a face and uses the same effect.

Does it keep the photo details such as location?

No. The new photo is saved without the camera and location details of the original, so it is safer to share.

Which model is used, and can I use it commercially?

YuNet from the OpenCV Zoo, released under the MIT licence, which allows commercial use. The file is about 0.2 MB.
