Password generator

Create strong random passwords in your browser, with a strength estimate.

Strength: Very strong (about 102 bits). Longer is stronger than adding symbols.

Your files stay on your device

How it works

  1. 1Set the length. 16 or more is a good start.
  2. 2Choose which kinds of characters to include.
  3. 3Copy the password you like, or generate again.
  4. 4Save it in a password manager, and use a different one for every account.

What the options do

Length
From 6 to 64 characters. Every extra character makes the password much harder to guess.
Character types
Lower case, upper case, digits and symbols. Each type you pick appears at least once.
Leave out look-alikes
Removes characters that are easy to confuse, such as I, l, 1, O and 0, useful if you must type it by hand.
How many
Make one or a list of up to twenty.

Privacy

Passwords are created in your browser with its cryptographic random generator. They are never sent or stored anywhere, not even in your history on this page.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to generate a password on a website?

Here, yes: the code runs on your device and makes no network request with the password. You can check this in your browser's network tab. As a habit, you may still add a few characters of your own.

How long should a password be?

At least 14 to 16 characters for important accounts. With all four character types, 16 characters give about 100 bits of strength, far beyond what attackers can guess.

What does the strength number mean?

Bits of entropy: the length multiplied by log2 of the number of possible characters. Each extra bit doubles the guesses needed. Above about 80 bits is very strong.

Should I just use symbols for strength?

Length matters more. A 20-character password of letters alone beats a 10-character one with symbols. Use symbols only if a site demands them.

How do I remember it?

You should not. Use a password manager and one strong master password, and turn on two-step sign-in for important accounts.
