Barcode generator

Create EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 128 and Code 39 barcodes as PNG or SVG.

Any letters, digits and common symbols. Good for inventory, shipping and asset labels.

For retail products, the number must come from GS1 for your own brand. A made-up EAN can clash with someone else's product.

How it works

  1. 1Choose the barcode type.
  2. 2Type the value. The tool checks it against the rules of that type.
  3. 3Adjust the bar width, height and colours.
  4. 4Download the PNG or SVG.

What the options do

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A
Retail product codes. Enter one digit fewer than the full length and the check digit is added for you.
Code 128
Letters, digits and symbols. Compact, and the usual choice for inventory and shipping labels.
Code 39
Capital letters, digits and a few symbols. Older but widely supported.
Bar width and height
Wider bars and taller codes scan more easily at a distance.

Questions people ask

Can I use this to sell products in shops?

Retail codes (EAN and UPC) must be registered through GS1 so each number belongs to your brand only. A made-up number may belong to another company's product. For your own stock control, Code 128 is fine.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of EAN and UPC codes, calculated from the others, so a scanner can catch a misread. If you type the check digit yourself and it is wrong, the code is rejected.

Why does my value show an error?

It does not fit the type. EAN-13 needs 12 or 13 digits, EAN-8 needs 7 or 8, UPC-A needs 11 or 12. Code 39 does not allow lower case letters.

Which format is best for inventory?

Code 128, because it holds the full range of characters in a short code.

Is a barcode the same as a QR code?

No. Barcodes are one-dimensional and hold a short number or text. Use the QR code generator when you need a link or more data.
