How it works

  1. 1Choose your images or drag them onto the page. You can add up to 100 at once, in any mix of JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP.
  2. 2Pick the format you want: WebP or AVIF for smaller files, PNG or JPG for files that open everywhere.
  3. 3Set the quality. For the web, 75 to 85 is a good start. Open the other options if you also want to shrink very large photos.
  4. 4Select Convert images. Each result shows its size next to the original. Download single files or everything as one ZIP.

What the options do

Convert to
WebP is small and works in every current browser. AVIF is often smaller still but slower to create. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. JPG is the most widely supported and has no transparency.
Quality
Applies to WebP, AVIF and JPG. Lower gives a smaller file with more visible loss. PNG has no quality setting because it never discards detail.
AVIF effort
Fast finishes sooner and makes a slightly larger file. Smallest tries harder and can take much longer on big photos.
Longest side
Scales down photos that are larger than the chosen size, keeping the shape. Photos that are already smaller are not enlarged.
Background for JPG
JPG cannot be transparent, so see-through areas are filled with this colour.

Questions people ask

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, so your pictures never leave your device. The AVIF encoder is a small WebAssembly program that is loaded the first time you choose AVIF.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

WebP is the safe choice: every current browser opens it and it is quick to create. AVIF is often smaller at the same look, which helps page speed, but it takes longer to create and some older programs cannot open it. For a website you can offer AVIF first and WebP as a fallback.

Why is my new file bigger than the original?

Converting a file that is already small and heavily compressed, or converting to PNG, can make it larger. PNG never discards detail, so photos get big. Try WebP or AVIF with a lower quality for the smallest files.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes for WebP, AVIF and PNG. JPG cannot be transparent, so those areas are filled with the background colour you choose.

Does it keep the photo metadata such as location?

No. The converted file carries only the picture, so camera details and GPS location in the original are not copied. That is useful for privacy, but also means the colour profile is not kept.

What happens to animated GIF or WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted. To make an animation use GIF maker, or to turn video into a GIF use Video to GIF.
