Questions people ask

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 50 to 75 that is 25 divided by 50, which is 50%.

Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back to the start?

The second percentage applies to a larger number. 100 up 50% is 150, and 150 down 50% is 75, so you end 25% below where you began.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

If a rate moves from 4% to 5%, it rose by one percentage point, which is a 25% increase in the rate itself.

Why does percentage change say the start cannot be zero?

Dividing by zero is undefined. There is no meaningful percent change from nothing.

How many decimals are shown?

Up to six, with trailing zeros removed.
