Questions people ask

Do two discounts add together?

No. The second applies to the reduced price. 20% off then 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount rate). A price of 80 after 20% off was 80 / 0.8 = 100.

Is tax added before or after the discount?

This tool adds it after, which is how most shops charge. Some regions tax the full price, so check your receipt.

What is the effective discount?

The total saving as a share of the original price, ignoring tax.

Can I use it for markup?

Yes. Use the Percentage calculator's Add X% option for markups, or enter a negative amount here if you prefer.
