BMI is a rough screening number for adults. It ignores muscle, age and body shape, and is not a diagnosis. Talk to a health professional about your health.

How it works

  1. 1Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. 2Enter your weight and height.
  3. 3Read your BMI, the category and the healthy weight range.
  4. 4Treat the result as a starting point and speak to a professional about your health.

What the options do

Metric
Weight in kilograms and height in centimetres.
Imperial

Questions people ask

What are the BMI categories?

For adults, the World Health Organization uses under 18.5 as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obese.

Is BMI accurate?

It is a quick screening number. It does not separate muscle from fat, so muscular people can score high, and it ignores age, sex and where weight is carried. Some Asian populations face higher health risks at lower BMI, and some guidelines use lower cut-offs.

Does it work for children?

No. Children and teenagers are compared with growth charts for their age and sex. Use a paediatric growth calculator for them.

Is this medical advice?

No. It cannot diagnose anything. Talk to a doctor or dietitian about weight and health.

How is the healthy range calculated?

It is the weight at which your height would give a BMI of 18.5 and of 24.9.
