Formula Rate = (income + costs) / (1 - tax%) / billable hours per year

A starting point. Market rates, your experience and the value of the work also set what you can charge.

How it works

  1. 1Enter the take-home income you want per year and your yearly business costs.
  2. 2Enter the tax and savings share to set aside.
  3. 3Enter weekly hours, the share you can bill and the weeks you will not work.
  4. 4Read the hourly rate, day rate and monthly revenue target.

What the options do

Share of hours you can bill
Time spent on admin, emails, finding clients and learning is unpaid. Beginners often bill only half their hours.
Weeks off
Holidays, public holidays, sick days and gaps between projects.
Tax and savings
The share of revenue to keep aside for tax, pension and a safety buffer.

Questions people ask

Why is the rate higher than a salary divided by hours?

Employees are paid for all their hours and get holidays, tools and sometimes benefits. A freelancer pays for these from the rate and can only charge for billable time.

What is a realistic billable share?

Many freelancers bill 50 to 70 percent of the hours they work. Start with 60 and adjust as you track your time.

Should I just charge this rate?

It is the minimum that meets your goal. Your skills, client budgets and the value of the result decide what you can actually charge. Fixed project prices often beat hourly billing.

Which currency should I enter?

Any. Use one currency throughout, such as taka or dollars.

Does it include client payment delays?

No. Add a buffer to the costs or tax share if clients often pay late.
