Unit converter
Length, weight, volume, temperature and more.
Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and bits, in decimal and binary units.
Formula Decimal: 1 KB = 1000 B, 1 MB = 1000 KB. Binary: 1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB. 1 byte = 8 bits.
Windows shows binary sizes but labels them KB, MB and GB, which is why a "500 GB" drive shows about 465 GB there.
Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.
A maker's 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1024 three times and shows about 931 GB, even though nothing is missing.
MB is megabytes and Mb is megabits. A 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 megabytes per second.
Divide the file size in megabits by your speed in megabits per second. A 500 MB file is 4000 megabits, so it takes about 40 seconds at 100 Mbps, ignoring overhead.
With ten significant digits, switching to scientific notation for extremes.
Both, for different names. KB, MB and GB officially mean powers of 1000. KiB, MiB and GiB mean powers of 1024.
