How it works

  1. 1Read the live Unix time at the top, or copy it.
  2. 2To convert a timestamp, type it in the left box. The unit is detected from its size.
  3. 3To convert a date, pick a date and time on the right and say whether it is in your time zone or UTC.
  4. 4Copy the value you need.

What the options do

Questions people ask

What is a Unix timestamp?

The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, called the epoch. It is the same everywhere in the world, which makes it useful for storing times.

Seconds or milliseconds?

A 10-digit number such as 1700000000 is in seconds, and a 13-digit number is in milliseconds. JavaScript and Java use milliseconds, while most Unix tools and many APIs use seconds.

Does a timestamp have a time zone?

No. It is always counted from the UTC epoch. Time zones only matter when you turn it into a calendar date, which this tool shows both ways.

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32-bit number run out on 19 January 2038. Browsers and modern 64-bit systems are not affected.

Can it handle dates before 1970?

Yes. A negative timestamp is a time before the epoch, for example -86400 is 31 December 1969.
