How it works

  1. 1Paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right.
  2. 2Use the options to ignore extra spaces or letter case.
  3. 3Read the result: green lines were added, red lines were removed.
  4. 4Choose Show only changed lines to skip what stayed the same.

What the options do

Ignore extra spaces
Lines that differ only in leading, trailing or repeated spaces count as the same.
Ignore upper and lower case
Treats Hello and hello as the same.
Show only changed lines
Hides unchanged lines so only differences remain.
Swap sides
Exchanges the original and changed text.

Questions people ask

How does it decide what changed?

It finds the longest run of lines the two texts share and treats everything else as an addition or a removal. Changed lines are then compared word by word to highlight the exact words.

Is there a size limit?

It works well up to a few thousand lines. If two very long texts have almost nothing in common, it asks you to compare smaller parts, to keep your browser responsive.

Does it work for code?

Yes, as plain text. It has no knowledge of syntax, so moved code shows as removed in one place and added in another.

Why do identical-looking lines show as changed?

Often trailing spaces, tabs versus spaces or different line endings. Turn on Ignore extra spaces to check.

Can I save the result?

You can select and copy the result from the page. There is no export file in this version.
