How it works

  1. 1Paste several sentences of English text.
  2. 2Read the Flesch reading ease score and the plain label next to it.
  3. 3Look at words per sentence and long words to see what to fix.
  4. 4Shorten sentences and swap long words, then check again.

What the options do

Flesch reading ease
Higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English, 30 to 50 is hard, below 30 is very hard.
Flesch-Kincaid grade
The US school grade a reader needs to follow the text. 8 is a good target for general audiences.
Gunning fog
Another grade estimate that weighs long words more heavily.

Questions people ask

Does the score work for Bangla or other languages?

No. The formulas are built for English syllables and sentence lengths. A score for other languages would be meaningless.

How are syllables counted?

By a simple rule on vowel groups, which is right for most words but not all. Expect small differences from other tools.

What score should I aim for?

For web content and general readers, aim for a reading ease of 60 or more, about grade 8. Technical or legal text will score lower and that can be fine for its readers.

Does a high score mean good writing?

No. It measures sentence and word length only. Clear, accurate and useful matters more than a number.

How much text do I need?

At least a few sentences. Scores for very short texts swing wildly. A hundred words or more is better.
