Files: owner writes, everyone reads

Your files stay on your device

How it works

  1. 1Tick read, write and execute for the owner, the group and everyone else.
  2. 2Or type an octal value such as 755, or choose a common setting.
  3. 3Add setuid, setgid or sticky if you need them.
  4. 4Copy the chmod command.

What the options do

Octal value
Each digit adds read (4), write (2) and execute (1) for one class. 7 means all three, 5 means read and execute, 4 means read only.
Symbolic
The nine-character form shown by ls -l, for example rwxr-xr-x.
Special bits
Setuid and setgid run a program as its owner or group. Sticky on a folder lets only a file's owner delete it.

Privacy

This tool runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to a server.

Questions people ask

What does chmod 755 mean?

The owner can read, write and run it, while the group and everyone else can read and run it. It is a normal setting for scripts and folders.

What should I use for a web server?

Commonly 644 for files and 755 for folders. Avoid 777, which lets any user on the machine change the file.

Why does a folder need execute?

On a folder, execute means permission to enter it and reach the files inside. Without it, even readable files in the folder cannot be opened.

What is a four-digit mode like 4755?

The first digit holds the special bits: 4 is setuid, 2 is setgid and 1 is sticky. 4755 is 755 with setuid on.

Does this change any files?

No. It only builds the command text. You run the command yourself in a terminal.
